Repair high heels at home

The high heel shoe is said to have been invented in the sixteenth century when a short statured aristocrat named Catherine of Medici from Paris began to wear them to make her appear taller. The popularity of high heels then spread through out the remainder of Europe. However, it wasnЎЇt until the nineteenth century that high heels made their way into the United States.

Today, they are mass - produced, and they are one of the biggest sellers in shoe stores. There are several different types of heels, and they include the Cuban heel, which is a broad heel with a medium height; the French heel, which is a fairly high, narrow heel; the spiked heel or stiletto heel is a real high, narrow heel; the stacked heel, which is made from many layers of leather; and the wineglass heel which is made in the configuration of a wineglass.

If you wear high heel shoes, you probably are attracted to their stylish appeal. Or, you might like the added height that this type of shoes can give you. Whatever the reason, you probably know the bad news about high heel shoes. They have a definite disadvantage in comparison to flatter shoes. Inevitably, the heel can, and often does, come loose or even breaks off from the sole. This can happen most often when high heels get caught in thick carpeting or on stairs, or when the wearer trips or walks hard on the side of the shoe. The good news, though, is that you can repair your broken high heels - whatever the problem may be - at home without taking them to a shoe repair shop. To repair a heel that is completely broken off from the shoe, you will need a tube of shoe glue and some additional shoe nails. If you try to replace the broken heel by merely nailing it back, you will find that the original nails will slide back out of their holes. Therefore, you will first need to cover the heel with shoe glue. (Be sure to follow the manufacturerЎЇs instructions on the tube in order to achieve the best results.) Then, carefully align the heel back onto the sole of the shoe and press it together; wipe off any excess glue. Finally, coat the original nails with glue, and then reinsert them into their respective holes. Use a tack hammer to tap a few more nails into the heel for additional reinforcement.

Allow the shoe glue to dry thoroughly, then check the strength of the repair by tugging on the heel. If it still seems a bit loose, you can use some small - headed screws to add strength. And, before you are done, make sure that you pound additional nails into the mate of the high heel. This way, both shoes remain balanced. The same rule pertains to buying a replacement heel. If the heel that broke off is damaged and cannot be reused, be sure that you replace it with the same size, same - shaped heel. If you try to change the size of the heel, you will change the balance of the shoe too.

In order to repair a heel that has broken in two pieces, you can use shoe glue to cement it back together. After it has thoroughly dried, use a tack hammer and some small nails to reinforce the repair.

Another common problem with high heels - especially narrow stiletto heels- is that the tips of the heels tend to wear down. You can purchase a pair of heel tip replacements at your local shoe repair shop to repair this problem. (Be sure to follow the manufacturerЎЇs instructions in order to achieve the best results.) The replacements are small, hard rubber pieces that are placed on the bottom of each heel. You then tap the small nails into the heel to hold the replacements in place
